Invasion of Denmark and Norway

1940-04-09 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Germany begins an operation to occupy two Scandinavian states.

Norway and Denmark sought to remain neutral, but their strategic position was critical for control of the North Sea and routes supplying raw materials.

On 9 April 1940, German forces invaded both countries. The Danish government quickly ended organised resistance, while the Norwegian army continued fighting with Allied support.

Combat took place in ports, fjords and mountainous areas. British and French forces mounted amphibious operations, but were unable to hold the country.

The Norwegian government and king went into exile. German control of the coastline affected the naval and air war in the North Atlantic.
