Tripartite Pact

1940-09-27 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Germany, Italy and Japan formalise a military-political alliance.

Berlin, Rome and Tokyo formalised a political and military alliance intended to deter potential opponents. Their interests did not always coincide, however, and they often conducted military operations independently.

The Axis powers sought to coordinate their international positions and warn potential adversaries against intervention. The document formalised the political link between the European aggressor states and Japan.

The pact provided for mutual support in certain circumstances but did not create a unified operational command. The strategic objectives of its members often diverged.

The agreement intensified international confrontation on the eve of the further expansion of the war in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.
