Italian Invasion of Greece
Italian forces invade Greece from occupied Albania.
Italian forces advanced from occupied Albania, but the Greek army checked them and launched a counteroffensive. Later German intervention radically changed the situation in the Balkans.
Rome planned a quick victory and an expansion of its control in the Balkans. Italian forces instead encountered determined resistance in difficult mountainous terrain.
The Greek army not only stopped the advance but counterattacked into Albania. The Italian campaign became bogged down amid winter conditions.
The failure forced Berlin to pay greater attention to the Balkans. In the spring of 1941, Germany intervened in the war against Greece and Yugoslavia.
