Invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece

1941-04-06 · KEY EVENT

Germany and its allies begin the Balkan campaign.

The German offensive rapidly shattered Yugoslavia's defences and forced Greek forces to retreat. The occupation of the Balkans led to prolonged partisan warfare, repression and heavy civilian losses.

After a political crisis in Yugoslavia, Berlin attacked the country while simultaneously launching an offensive against Greece. German aircraft carried out destructive raids, including attacks on Belgrade.

A rapid armoured campaign overwhelmed organised Yugoslav resistance, while Axis forces in Greece broke through Allied defences. Part of the British force was evacuated by sea.

The occupation of the Balkans produced years of armed resistance, repression and mass violence against civilians. The Balkan theatre remained important until the end of the war.
