On 29–30 September, Einsatzgruppen units with the participation of other German formations shot tens of thousands of Jews at Babyn Yar. The perpetrators' own records give the figure of 33,771 victims for those two days.
During the occupation, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and other people persecuted by the Nazi authorities were also murdered at Babyn Yar.
Babyn Yar is one of the best-known sites of the Holocaust by bullets. The history of how this crime was remembered is important for understanding both the war and post-war memory politics.
