Allied Forces Leave the Malay Peninsula
British and Allied units withdraw to Singapore after the Japanese advance through Malaya.
The Japanese campaign down the Malay Peninsula advanced rapidly southward from December 1941. Allied forces steadily lost the initiative under pressure from mobile Japanese formations.
By the end of January, the defenders abandoned their mainland positions and concentrated on Singapore Island; the causeway linking it to the mainland was partly destroyed.
The withdrawal set the stage for the decisive battle for Singapore. Its fall in February became one of Britain's most serious defeats of the war.
