Fall of Singapore
The British garrison at Singapore surrenders to Japanese forces.
The surrender of the large British garrison became one of Britain's gravest colonial military defeats. Japan gained a strategic port and strengthened its control of the Malay Peninsula.
The Japanese advance through Malaya shattered British assumptions about the fortress's impregnability. Allied forces retreated toward Singapore under constant pressure from air and ground attacks.
After heavy fighting, the command decided to surrender. Tens of thousands of servicemen became prisoners of war, and many were subjected to extremely brutal treatment.
The defeat dealt a major blow to British imperial prestige and changed the balance of power in Southeast Asia.
