Battle of Midway
The US Navy wins a major victory over Japanese carrier forces.
In June 1942, the Japanese command planned to seize Midway Atoll and provoke a decisive engagement with American aircraft carriers. US intelligence obtained important information about the Japanese plan.
On 4 June, American carrier aircraft launched a series of strikes against the Japanese carrier force. During the campaign, Japan lost four aircraft carriers.
The United States also suffered losses, including the carrier Yorktown. Victory resulted from intelligence, operational decisions and the actions of aircrews under difficult conditions.
Midway is often described as one of the principal turning points of the Pacific War: Japan lost experienced air groups and a substantial portion of its offensive carrier strength.
