Dieppe Raid

The Allies carry out an unsuccessful amphibious raid on the French coast.

The operation was intended to test the feasibility of landing on a fortified coast and to gather practical experience. Canadian units bore the main burden of the fighting.

Strong German defences and problems with intelligence, landing arrangements and support led to heavy losses. Many troops were killed or taken prisoner.

The experience gained at Dieppe became important material for planning later amphibious assaults, although historians continue to debate the raid's strategic justification.
