Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
Jewish underground fighters begin armed resistance to the Nazi liquidation of the ghetto.
Fighters from the Jewish Combat Organization and other groups offered armed resistance to the German liquidation of the ghetto. The Nazis crushed the uprising, destroyed the district and deported or murdered many of its inhabitants.
After mass deportations to the killing centres, the remaining Jewish community of Warsaw faced the threat of final destruction. Underground organisations prepared weapons and defensive positions.
German forces used artillery, fire and systematic destruction of buildings to suppress the resistance. The fighters resisted despite an overwhelming imbalance of forces.
The uprising became a defining symbol of resistance during the Holocaust; most of its fighters and ghetto inhabitants were killed or deported.
