Four Days of Naples Uprising

1943-09-28 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Residents of Naples rise against German occupation forces.

After Italy's armistice, Germany occupied important parts of the country. Tensions in Naples grew under coercive measures by the occupation authorities.

At the end of September, residents launched an armed uprising known as the Four Days of Naples. Civilians from different social groups joined the resistance.

German forces left Naples before Allied troops entered. The city suffered serious destruction and the severe consequences of occupation.

The uprising became a symbol of Italian anti-fascist resistance and of the recovery of political agency after the fall of Mussolini's regime.
