Italy Declares War on Germany
The Italian government enters the war against its former ally on the side of the anti-Hitler coalition.
After the armistice with the Allies and the German occupation of much of the country, Italy experienced a political and military split. In the north, a fascist regime dependent on Berlin remained in place.
Some Italian troops and partisans cooperated with the Allies. At the same time, the campaign in Italy remained bitter and destructive for civilians.
The war in Italy continued until spring 1945, combining conventional front-line operations, resistance to occupation and civil conflict.
