Anzio Landings

1944-01-22 · ARCHIVE EVENT

American and British forces land behind German defensive positions in Italy.

The landing was intended to bypass German defences on the road to Rome, but Allied troops remained confined to the beachhead for months. The fighting at Anzio demonstrated the risks of an amphibious operation without rapid exploitation of initial success.

Allied planners hoped to bypass the Gustav Line and accelerate the advance toward Rome. The landing initially encountered limited resistance, but rapidly reinforced German forces contained the beachhead.

Instead of a quick breakout, prolonged fighting and artillery duels followed. Only in May were the Allies able to break through the surrounding positions.

The operation demonstrated the difficulty of turning an amphibious landing into a rapid operational breakthrough and became an important phase of the Italian campaign.
