Normandy Landings — D-Day
The Allies open a major front in Western Europe.
The Allies prepared the invasion of France for a long time, concentrating troops, landing craft and supplies in Britain. Success depended on control of the air and sea and on deceiving German intelligence.
On 6 June 1944, airborne and seaborne forces landed in Normandy. American, British, Canadian and other Allied troops attacked several beach sectors.
Resistance varied by sector; fighting was especially severe on Omaha Beach. Over the following weeks the Allies expanded the bridgehead while overcoming German defences in the Normandy bocage.
The operation opened a major front in Western Europe and became a crucial step toward the liberation of France and the subsequent advance into Germany.
