Allied Landings in Southern France

1944-08-15 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Allied troops land on France's Mediterranean coast.

Operation Dragoon complemented the Normandy invasion with an offensive in southern France. The Allies gained important Mediterranean ports and accelerated the expulsion of German forces from the country.

The operation was intended to open another axis of advance and secure major ports for supplying Allied armies. The landing was supported by French forces and the local Resistance.

German forces withdrew up the Rhône valley in an effort to avoid encirclement. The Allies quickly seized important ports and advanced north.

The new front complemented the advance from Normandy and helped accelerate the liberation of France.
