Bombing of Dresden
British and American aircraft carry out mass air raids on the German city of Dresden.
In February 1945, Allied strategic bombers attacked the city in a series of raids that caused major fires. Thousands of civilians and refugees were among the dead.
The scale of the destruction and the number of victims became the subject of prolonged research and political propaganda. Historians study the raids in the wider context of the strategic air war.
Dresden became one of the best-known examples in debates about military necessity, proportionality and the humanitarian consequences of bombing cities.
