Firebombing of Tokyo

1945-03-09 · KEY EVENT

During the night of 9–10 March, American bombers carry out a devastating incendiary attack on Tokyo.

The mass B-29 raid caused fires in densely built urban districts. Flames spread rapidly and many people were unable to escape from the burning neighbourhoods.

The attack killed an enormous number of civilians and destroyed large areas of the city. The strategic bombing campaign against Japanese cities continued afterwards.

The event became one of the greatest humanitarian disasters of the air war and a major part of debates over its moral limits.
