UN Charter Signed

1945-06-26 · KEY EVENT

Delegates at the San Francisco Conference sign the Charter of the United Nations.

The experience of two world wars encouraged the Allies to seek a new system of collective security. Delegates negotiated the powers of UN institutions and principles of international cooperation.

The Charter established goals including the maintenance of peace, the development of friendly relations and the protection of human rights. It required ratification before the organisation could formally begin operating.

The Charter entered into force on 24 October 1945, creating an institution that became the central forum of world diplomacy.
