Battles at Lake Khasan

1938-07-29 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Fighting broke out between the Red Army and forces of the Japanese Empire along the Soviet-Korean border.

A dispute over the heights near Lake Khasan escalated into a limited but intense armed conflict. Japanese units tried to consolidate positions that the Soviet side regarded as its territory.

The Soviet command brought in additional forces, including artillery and aircraft, and eventually restored control over the disputed area. The losses exposed weaknesses in training and command on both sides.

The conflict did not become a full-scale war, but it deepened tensions in East Asia. The following year, more serious fighting broke out at Khalkhin Gol.
