Second Naval Battle of Narvik

1940-04-13 · ARCHIVE EVENT

A British force again attacked German destroyers in the Norwegian fjords.

After the first engagement, German destroyers remained at Narvik with limited fuel and ammunition. The Allies sought to deprive the German landing force of support from the sea.

On 13 April, the British battleship Warspite and destroyers entered the fjords. Supporting aircraft and naval gunfire helped destroy or disable the remaining German destroyers.

German ground troops still held positions around Narvik. Victory at sea did not bring the immediate liberation of the port.

The battle's significance lay in Germany's loss of a substantial share of its destroyer force and in the demonstration of the Royal Navy's role in the Norwegian campaign.
