Allied Landing at Namsos
British and French forces began landing in central Norway.
After the German invasion, the Allies planned to support Norway and regain the initiative around Trondheim. Sea transport was critical because overland communications were poor.
On 14 April, British and French troops began landing in the Namsos area. The Allies hoped to advance toward Trondheim together with Norwegian units.
Difficult supply conditions and German air superiority made the bridgeheads increasingly hard to maintain. The attempt to alter the situation in central Norway did not produce the expected result.
By the end of April, the Allies had begun withdrawing, and in early May a large part of the force was evacuated from the area.
