Allied Withdrawal from Central Norway
British command begins withdrawing troops from the Trondheim area.
The Norwegian campaign developed faster than the Allies could deploy reinforcements. Germany used captured airfields, while British and French forces remained dependent on supply by sea.
On 27 April, withdrawal began from positions north and south of Trondheim. The evacuation took place under the threat of air attack.
The abandonment of central Norway did not end the campaign: Allied operations continued around Narvik for several more weeks.
The failure triggered sharp political debate in Britain and highlighted problems of coordination within the Allied command.
