Allies Recapture Narvik

1940-05-28 · ARCHIVE EVENT

Norwegian and Allied forces regain control of Narvik.

After the German invasion of Norway, Narvik remained one of the principal points of contention. Its strategic importance was linked to the export of Swedish iron ore.

At the end of May, Norwegian units supported by French, Polish and British forces went on the offensive. On 28 May, the Allies regained control of the town.

Despite the local success, the defeat of France forced the Allied command to reconsider its priorities. Evacuation from Norway began soon afterwards.

The capture of Narvik was an important symbolic Allied success, but it did not lead to the long-term retention of a northern bridgehead.
