Failure of the German Offensive on Moscow
Operation Typhoon fails to achieve its objective as the Soviet counteroffensive pushes Wehrmacht forces back from the capital.
The Battle of Moscow developed in the autumn of 1941, when German armies attempted to seize the Soviet capital before winter. Exhaustion, logistical problems and Soviet resistance halted the advance.
In December, the Red Army went over to the counteroffensive, and by early January it was clear that the German plan for a rapid capture of Moscow had failed. The front nevertheless remained extremely tense.
This was an important strategic check on the German offensive, but it did not end the fighting on the Eastern Front. New campaigns would follow in 1942.
