First US Troops Arrive in Northern Ireland
A US Army contingent lands in Northern Ireland after the United States enters the war.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States became a full participant in the global war. Sending troops to the British Isles was part of preparations for future operations in Europe.
The arrival had both symbolic and practical importance: the Allies organised accommodation, training, supply and joint command arrangements.
The large-scale landing in France would not take place until 1944, but the infrastructure needed for it was being created long beforehand.
