Axis Surrender in Tunisia
German and Italian forces end organised resistance in North Africa.
After their routes of retreat were blocked in Tunisia, German and Italian forces surrendered to the Allies. The victory ended the North African campaign and prepared the way for the invasion of Italy.
After the Second Battle of El Alamein and the Allied landings in Morocco and Algeria, Axis forces were pressed from both directions. In Tunisia, the defensive force gradually lost room to manoeuvre.
The Allies captured large numbers of enemy troops and secured control of the southern part of the Mediterranean theatre.
The end of the campaign opened the way to the invasion of Sicily and the Italian mainland.
