German Forces Occupy Rome
After the Italian armistice, German troops take control of Rome.
On 8 September 1943, the Italian armistice with the Allies was announced. Germany had prepared plans to disarm Italian forces and seize key cities.
On 10 September, German troops took control of Rome despite resistance by some Italian soldiers and civilians. The king and government left the capital.
The occupation placed the city's population under Nazi rule. Persecution of resistance members and Jews intensified.
The Allies entered Rome only in June 1944, after prolonged fighting in central Italy.
