After the 6 June 1944 landings, Allied troops fought for weeks in Normandy and struggled to advance rapidly into France.

On 25 July, American forces launched Operation Cobra, an offensive that broke through German defences and opened the way to mobile warfare.

The offensive relied on concentrated ground forces and air support. Its success allowed the Allies to advance more rapidly eastward across France.

The breakout from the Normandy bridgehead became a major stage in the liberation of France and the subsequent advance toward Germany's borders.
