Operation Market Garden

The Allies attempt to seize bridges in the Netherlands with airborne troops and a ground advance.

The plan aimed to cross several river barriers rapidly and reach Germany around established defensive positions. Airborne divisions landed near key bridges.

The ground advance was delayed, while British paratroopers at Arnhem faced stronger opposition than expected. The most distant bridge could not be held.

The operation produced local gains but failed to achieve its principal strategic objective. The war on the Western Front continued into the following winter.
