Fighting at the Dukla Pass
Soviet and Czechoslovak troops enter Slovakia.
The Carpathian sector gained importance after the Slovak National Uprising. An offensive through mountain passes required major effort and difficult logistics.
In early October, Soviet and Czechoslovak units reached Slovak territory while continuing to fight in the Dukla sector.
Mountain terrain, weather and German defences slowed the advance, and both sides suffered heavy losses.
The Dukla operation later became an important element of Czechoslovak historical memory about liberation from Nazi occupation.
