Landings on Leyte

1944-10-20 · KEY EVENT

American forces begin the return to the Philippines with landings on Leyte.

American forces landed on the Philippine island of Leyte, beginning a major campaign to retake the Philippines. The offensive threatened Japanese sea communications and access to the resources of Southeast Asia.

After a prolonged Pacific campaign, the Allies returned to the Philippines, which Japan had occupied early in the war. The landings were supported by massive naval and air forces.

The Japanese fleet attempted to disrupt the operation, leading to a series of battles in Leyte Gulf. On land, the campaign continued through difficult terrain with heavy losses.

The return to the Philippines weakened Japan's communications with resource-producing areas of Southeast Asia.
