Trinity Nuclear Test
The United States conducts the world's first detonation of a nuclear device in New Mexico.
The test was the culmination of work by the Manhattan Project, whose scientists and engineers operated under strict secrecy. It demonstrated the practical feasibility of a new type of weapon.
The successful test had direct significance for the military and political decisions of the US leadership during the final weeks of the war with Japan.
Trinity marked the beginning of the nuclear age, whose consequences shaped international security and public debate for decades.
