In August 1945, Japan faced the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet entry into the war in the Far East.
On 14 August, Japan's leadership agreed to accept the terms of surrender. The emperor's decision was announced publicly in Japan on 15 August.
The announcement that the war would end was not the same as signing the formal instrument, which took place on 2 September 1945.
The decision completed the political process of Japan's withdrawal from the war and opened the way to Allied occupation and post-war reforms.
